From the Wisdom Vault…
In the last edition on December 17, we left the three wise coaches just after they received a powerful spark to become a coach. Let’s see what happens six months later…
Three Wise Coaches Face Their Stuff
Michelle is up late again. She works on her coaching business when the kids are at school and after they’ve gone to bed. Tonight, her head is spinning. She’s read everything she can get her hands on from the coaching and marketing gurus, but no matter what angle they suggest, the idea of selling herself really turns her stomach. When she feels discouraged a voice inside her head says: “I don’t have what it takes to market myself.”
Always a confidante to neighbors and friends, it was easy for Michelle to get two pro-bono clients - both moms from her Wednesday spinning class at the gym. They say they’re getting great value from her coaching, but she can’t imagine asking them to pay her for it. She thinks: “Who do I think I am? No one will pay for this!”
Her husband Brian reminds her how smart she is and says, “Just get out there and believe in yourself, Michelle, you’ll blow them away!” The truth is, she’s so afraid of being a bigger force in the world. “What will happen if I succeed? How will I keep the balance for my family?”
Just now, Brian shuffles in yawning and puts his hands on her shoulders. “You’re trying to figure this all out yourself. Get some help. Everyone who starts a new business needs mentors. I just heard from a colleague about this membership program called Prosperous Coach. It’s this whole business building system for coaches.” Michelle blinks. A system for doing this? As Brian climbs the stairs to bed she says: “I’ll be there as soon as I join Prosperous Coach . . .”
At 8:00 pm, Barbara is just hanging up the phone from one of her four clients. She’s amazed how energized she feels. Coaching doesn’t feel like work at all!
Not everything in her coaching business is so easy. Her plan was to enroll 10 full fee clients and then give notice at work. But she’s realized there just aren’t enough hours in the week to work full time at her corporate job, create a website, network, attract clients, and serve them well. And, even if she could manage it, she did the math - at her current fees of $300 per month, 10 clients would barely pay the bills, much less meet her lifestyle goals.
All her life, financial security has been a driving factor. That’s why she’s stayed so long in jobs that didn’t fulfill her. When she’s working for someone else, she knows her worth and feels confident, but as a new business owner she thinks: “I don’t know enough yet to charge higher fees. I have to master coaching first.”
Feeling tightness in her chest, she tells herself: “Be practical. You can’t live without your salary and you can’t charge higher fees right now. Coaching will just have to wait.” But another voice inside says: “Wait for what? You have what you need to be successful at this right now. Take the leap!” It’s the voice of her true heart, and she feels her body relax.
The next day, she crafts a plan with three overarching intentions:
1. Reduce expenses, budget for my business and raise my fees.
2. Listen to my heart and act from that voice always.
3. Give notice at work by August 15.
With equal parts fear and exhilaration, Barbara knows she must take the leap soon if she’s ever going to get what she really wants - freedom. . .
In California, Mark is packing up his university office. He did it! He gave notice six months ago, and just finished his last semester as a university professor. The faculty threw him a party today and everyone kept asking: “What are you going to be doing now?”
Mark found it difficult to explain about coaching. Most people think it has something to do with counseling or consulting. Also, he wants to take a spiritual approach to his coaching and he’s hesitant to reveal that. He thinks: “I’ll turn people off if I show them all that I am.”
His assistant, Ethan, helps Mark load his Volvo with 15 years of accumulated stuff. “You know, Mark, I never thought you’d stop teaching, you’re so good at it. You reach your students on a spiritual level.” Ethan goes on: “I hope you’ll find a way to incorporate teaching and spiritual guidance into your coaching practice. Those are compelling gifts that you have.” Mark is stunned. He feels seen for the first time by his assistant. Or, had Ethan and his students, even the faculty, always seen him this clearly?
Driving home Mark feels vulnerable and yet powerful at the same time. He wonders: “Can I really show the world who I am?” Over the next week, crafting a 30 second intro for his new business, he grapples with the language, writing versions that are inspired from his true voice and other versions that he thinks will be more acceptable to prospects. He keeps asking himself: “Who am I really? What is my life purpose?” The answers are clear in his integrity. Authenticity wins every time. . .
