From the Wisdom Vault…

In the last ezine on 12/24, we saw the three wise coaches grapple with fears and challenges. Now, two months later. . .

Mark wakes up early with a busy mind. He’s been writing web content for two weeks. The process is helping him to crystallize exactly what his coaching services are and how they benefit his target market. Using the Working Websites for Coaches ebook has made this process simple. Now talking to prospects about his coaching services is easy too.It used to be that when it was time for Mark tell prospects about his fees and ask them to hire him — he’d chicken out every time. So all his effort getting and giving a sample session was wasted. His mindset then was “I’ll give this coaching thing a try for a few months, but then I’m going to have to go find another job.”Then one of Mark’s coach training classmates told him about a new membership level at Prosperous Coach, called The Coach’s Power Path. He decided to sign up. With the step by step business building and marketing guides delivered to his inbox every week, Mark quickly learned to:

1) Act as if he is already successful by highly valuing his time.
2) Tell his prospects exactly how his services will benefit them.
3) Directly ask them to hire him.
4) Stay detached from outcome.
5) And, build visibility every week.

One month later Mark has signed up four full fee clients and has one hundred fifty more names on his ezine subscriber list. He plans to launch his ezine with his website in one week! He can’t believe that just a few weeks ago he was seriously considering looking for a job! The turning point came when he stopped looking for exit routes and truely committed himself to The Coach’s Power Path. . .

Meanwhile, Barbara still has her full time job and as many coaching clients as she can possible handle - only six! Barbara knows where to find more prospects. That’s not the problem. But she’s convinced herself she can’t charge any more than $300 a month and has no more time for clients. The tape playing in her head says, “What can I do now?”

But the problem is not about what to do. Barbara has backed herself into a tight box with her thinking, and she’s stuck.

In another late night web surfing session, she comes upon a question on a blog that grabs her attention: If you knew the secrets of a prosperous coach, would you use them? Ready for the keys to mastery, Barbara signs up for The Coach’s Power Path.

Suddenly, Barbara realizes how she’s squashed her growth potential by playng small. She learns to take more powerful steps every day in alignment with prosperity thinking. With regular support from the Coaching Community Mastermind calls and the use of the eLifePlans software that’s part of the membership, she keeps track of her vision. And she’s convinced to charge what she’s worth, which has an immediate positive impact on her clients as well as her income.

You see, the low fees she was charging didn’t reflect the true value of her services, and they were subtly dis-empowering her clients not to take the coaching seriously. She learned how to form a group coaching program for those who choose to spend less on coaching.

But the biggest internal shift Barbara made was to fortify her commitment to herself - to value her services more highly, honor her skills and trust her clients. She picks up the phone to make an appointment with her boss. It’s time to give notice. . .

Michelle has been shifting her thinking as well. Originally, she thought she’d just call herself a life coach and work with anyone on anything. But she worked too hard and made little impact. It was too hard to build visibility that way. Michelle finally sees how much less time she’d have to spend marketing if she focused on one distinct target market.

With help from Sue Brundege, the Prosperous Coach Mentor, Michelle narrowed to boutique real estate agents as her niche market. Before she had kids, Michelle was a top agent at a boutique brokerage that focused on historic properties. It was lucrative and fun.

Yet doubts still hold her back. She’s a consummate mother and knows that role down to the cellular level. But Michelle has lost confidence as a businessperson. She keeps putting the brakes on her success, losing momentum and having to push hard to get going again. It’s tiring.

She says to Sue, “Maybe I’m just not ready to be a coach.” Gently, Sue encourages her to let go of pat conclusions. She reminds her about her passion for coaching, and how well her clients are doing. Then, Sue makes two strong requests: that she surround herself with other successful coaches and reconnect with her real estate colleagues.

So Michele upgrades her Prosperous Coach membership to The Coach’s Power Path, because she knew the Community Mastermind and open coaching days alone would help her boost her confidence and give her more support. And then it was easy to make a true commitment - one backed by her time, money & intention, and fortified by the certainty that this is her calling and she must honor it. . .

Is it time for you to fortify your commitment to your success?

Coaching is such an amazing gift and I know you want to be a masterful coach. You will be. Would you also like to be a financially successful coach? Then recommit to a course of daily action, have compassion for your fear, but let your trust for your original vision speak more loudly and move you forward.

In Breakthrough in 2008, we’ll talk about what true commitment means and how to move beyond fears. It’s an everyday hero’s journey and I’d like to help you make it big on your own terms.

From the Wisdom Vault…

In the last edition on December 17, we left the three wise coaches just after they received a powerful spark to become a coach. Let’s see what happens six months later…

Three Wise Coaches Face Their Stuff

Michelle is up late again. She works on her coaching business when the kids are at school and after they’ve gone to bed. Tonight, her head is spinning. She’s read everything she can get her hands on from the coaching and marketing gurus, but no matter what angle they suggest, the idea of selling herself really turns her stomach. When she feels discouraged a voice inside her head says: “I don’t have what it takes to market myself.”

Always a confidante to neighbors and friends, it was easy for Michelle to get two pro-bono clients - both moms from her Wednesday spinning class at the gym. They say they’re getting great value from her coaching, but she can’t imagine asking them to pay her for it. She thinks: “Who do I think I am? No one will pay for this!”

Her husband Brian reminds her how smart she is and says, “Just get out there and believe in yourself, Michelle, you’ll blow them away!” The truth is, she’s so afraid of being a bigger force in the world. “What will happen if I succeed? How will I keep the balance for my family?”

Just now, Brian shuffles in yawning and puts his hands on her shoulders. “You’re trying to figure this all out yourself. Get some help. Everyone who starts a new business needs mentors. I just heard from a colleague about this membership program called Prosperous Coach. It’s this whole business building system for coaches.” Michelle blinks. A system for doing this? As Brian climbs the stairs to bed she says: “I’ll be there as soon as I join Prosperous Coach . . .”

At 8:00 pm, Barbara is just hanging up the phone from one of her four clients. She’s amazed how energized she feels. Coaching doesn’t feel like work at all!

Not everything in her coaching business is so easy. Her plan was to enroll 10 full fee clients and then give notice at work. But she’s realized there just aren’t enough hours in the week to work full time at her corporate job, create a website, network, attract clients, and serve them well. And, even if she could manage it, she did the math - at her current fees of $300 per month, 10 clients would barely pay the bills, much less meet her lifestyle goals.

All her life, financial security has been a driving factor. That’s why she’s stayed so long in jobs that didn’t fulfill her. When she’s working for someone else, she knows her worth and feels confident, but as a new business owner she thinks: “I don’t know enough yet to charge higher fees. I have to master coaching first.”

Feeling tightness in her chest, she tells herself: “Be practical. You can’t live without your salary and you can’t charge higher fees right now. Coaching will just have to wait.” But another voice inside says: “Wait for what? You have what you need to be successful at this right now. Take the leap!” It’s the voice of her true heart, and she feels her body relax.

The next day, she crafts a plan with three overarching intentions:
1. Reduce expenses, budget for my business and raise my fees.
2. Listen to my heart and act from that voice always.
3. Give notice at work by August 15.

With equal parts fear and exhilaration, Barbara knows she must take the leap soon if she’s ever going to get what she really wants - freedom. . .

In California, Mark is packing up his university office. He did it! He gave notice six months ago, and just finished his last semester as a university professor. The faculty threw him a party today and everyone kept asking: “What are you going to be doing now?”

Mark found it difficult to explain about coaching. Most people think it has something to do with counseling or consulting. Also, he wants to take a spiritual approach to his coaching and he’s hesitant to reveal that. He thinks: “I’ll turn people off if I show them all that I am.”

His assistant, Ethan, helps Mark load his Volvo with 15 years of accumulated stuff. “You know, Mark, I never thought you’d stop teaching, you’re so good at it. You reach your students on a spiritual level.” Ethan goes on: “I hope you’ll find a way to incorporate teaching and spiritual guidance into your coaching practice. Those are compelling gifts that you have.” Mark is stunned. He feels seen for the first time by his assistant. Or, had Ethan and his students, even the faculty, always seen him this clearly?

Driving home Mark feels vulnerable and yet powerful at the same time. He wonders: “Can I really show the world who I am?” Over the next week, crafting a 30 second intro for his new business, he grapples with the language, writing versions that are inspired from his true voice and other versions that he thinks will be more acceptable to prospects. He keeps asking himself: “Who am I really? What is my life purpose?” The answers are clear in his integrity. Authenticity wins every time. . .

Did you have to face your stuff too this year?

From the Wisdom Vault…

During holiday times, it’s a challenge to keep your motivation strong for your coaching business. To help with that, over the next few weeks, I’ll share the story of the Three Wise Coaches…

Three Wise Coaches Emerge

One clear December evening, Barbara leaves her corporate office, as usual a bit later than she planned. Tonight, like the homework-laden bag on her shoulder, she feels the heavy weight of her leadership position more keenly than ever. Her work is engaging and the salary is great, but she feels empty sometimes. As her attention is drawn by a bright star in the East she realizes with finality that she’s not going to work here another year.

Driving away, it dawns on Barbara that she wants to be an executive coach - set her own hours and break out of the political scene at the office. She’ll work with women like herself who long to leave the golden cage of corporate life to do their own work in the world.

Once home, she sits down at the computer and Googles the night away researching the coaching profession and setting bold plans to make her vision become her reality…

On the other side of the continent, Mark is finishing up his last sociology lecture this semester. It’s almost Christmas break, and as his students file out of the auditorium, he touches his assistant’s shoulder and says: “I’ll pack up here, Ethan, you go on home.” In his small and messy university office, Mark makes a half-hearted effort to get organized for the work he’ll do during break. But his mind wanders as his eyes fall on an article about life coaching - the third one he’s read this month.

In his mind’s eye, Mark sees himself with his own professional coaching business working with socially responsible entrepreneurs… He is giving a keynote presentation on a platform in front of thousands. Later, he’s signing his book at the back of the room and setting up sample sessions with prospective coaching clients.

When he finally comes back to the present, it’s nearly 6:00. He shakes his head and laughs. But as he leaves the campus, he looks up and sees a brilliant light in the Eastern sky, and he knows that his life is about to change…

Meanwhile, in a large city in the Midwest, Michelle encourages her kids to clean up before dinner. There’s a roast chicken in the oven and she’s making a salad, while her husband, Brian, clears the kitchen table, which is piled high with books and papers. As he sets the table, he tells her news about his software business. Michelle is listening but she’s distracted by what she’s been reading this afternoon while the kids were at school.

Brian is saying that this quarter’s profits have exceeded expectations. He says: “I’m thinking we should do something crazy like take a vacation for once!” They high five and do a little victory dance in front of the sink. Turning, Michelle sees something through the kitchen window - an amazing star she’s never noticed before is rising in the East. Suddenly, her resolve is set. Tonight is the night to talk with Brian about her becoming a life coach…

…Stay tuned as the story continues next week, when we will see these Emerging Coaches face their stuff as they begin to transform themselves into Established Coaches.

What’s Your Big Why?

December 10th, 2007

From the Wisdom Vault…

Are you dreaming of doing meaningful work that is financially satisfying? No doubt you’ve had a taste of meaningful already. Coaching your clients is probably the best “job” you’ve ever had. It’s so satisfying to help others succeed.

As fun as it is, some days having a coaching business feels more difficult than it should — trying to get everything done and keep your pipeline full of ideal clients. Some days you’re overwhelmed and not 100% certain this was such a good idea. You need something to help you spring out of bed in the morning and take those decisive steps towards your success.

When human beings are well motivated we can do anything!

Even if you’re motivated by helping others or earning, it might not be enough of a why for those overwhelm days. Having a BIG WHY — a set of delightful goals — will draw you forward even on the days when confidence flags. It will shift you from being motivated by what you’ve GOT to do (to avoid pain), to being motivated by what you GET to do as a reward.

Some of my BIG WHYs are:
- I want to be an angel investor for innovative businesses that come up with brilliant energy saving ways to recycle.
- I want to celebrate with Prosperous Coach members as they break through the six figure threshold in their businesses in 2008.
- I want to stay in a lovely house on the beach in Hawaii for a month every year. (I’ve got the house and beach picked out.)

These specific goals make me smile when I think about them. I visualize myself already there and that gives me the motivation to keep growing my business, even if I feel overwhelmed.

Now, take out a piece of paper and write down your BIG WHY. What is a big enough why that will keep you walking the path of the prosperous coach?

- Is it about freedom? What exactly will you do with that freedom?
- Is it about helping others? What exactly will you help them achieve and when?
- Would you like to earn more money? Set a stretch revenue goal and then decide what you will do with that money that truly delights you!

Then, post your BIG WHY — your set of delightful goals — some place where you can see it every day. And make a plan that will help you achieve those goals.

Why is it more important than ever to become a member of Prosperous Coach?

If you become a member of Prosperous Coach by December 14th, you’ll receive a special New Years gift that will keep you on track in your business every day in 2008. Plus, you’ll receive an invitation to a special teleclass in January that you don’t want to miss…
